Konark is a town situated in the Puri district of the Indian state of Odisha. It is located on the east coast of India, about 65 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar. Konark is famous for the Sun Temple, also known as the Black Pagoda, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Sun Temple in Konark was built in the 13th century by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty. It is dedicated to the Hindu god Surya (the Sun) and is designed in the shape of a giant chariot with twelve pairs of carved stone wheels pulled by seven horses.
