Historic Town - Bishnupur, West Bengal

Bishnupur is a historic town located in the Bankura district of the Indian state of West Bengal. It is famous for its terracotta temples and is considered a hub of Bengal terracotta art. Bishnupur was the capital of the Malla dynasty, who ruled over the region from the 7th century until the 18th century.

 

The town is home to many ancient temples, some of which were built as far back as the 17th century. The most famous of these temples include the Rasmancha, the Jorbangla Temple, and the Madan Mohan Temple. These temples are known for their intricate terracotta carvings, which depict scenes from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and other Hindu epics.

 

Apart from its temples, Bishnupur is also known for its silk sarees, which are made using traditional techniques. The town also has a rich musical heritage, with the Bishnupur Gharana of Hindustani classical music originating here.

 

Bishnupur is well connected by road and rail, and can be easily reached from Kolkata, which is about 150 kilometers away. The best time to visit Bishnupur is between October and March, when the weather is pleasant and the town is at its most vibrant.
